Abandoned Architecture: A Photographic Journey Through Oblivion
This album is a personal journey through the ruins of a forgotten era. The structures photographed here are diverse — they do not all belong to the same architectural style or period. What unites them is abandonment: the slow, inevitable surrender to time. I have always been drawn to places where the clock stopped, where walls still hold the memory of lives once lived. Each photograph aims to capture not just the physical decay, but also the lingering atmosphere, the silence, and the stories embedded within these forgotten spaces.
The project took me across various locations, each with its own history and social context. Some were centres of power, others residential buildings, factories, or places of worship. Their abandonment often reflects dramatic political and economic shifts — a reminder of how quickly human endeavours can be forgotten. My aim was to create a visual narrative, to let the architecture speak for itself, and to invite the viewer to contemplate the past, present, and uncertain future of these spaces.
Technical Notes
- Equipment: All photographs were taken with an OPPO Find X5 smartphone, chosen for its versatility and ability to shoot RAW files in challenging lighting conditions.
- Lighting Challenges: Abandoned interiors present unique challenges — limited natural light, harsh contrasts, and deep shadows. The OPPO Find X5's dynamic range proved invaluable. I kept ISO fixed at 100 for maximum image quality throughout the series.
- Geographic and Historical Context: The structures span different countries and eras. Their abandonment reflects dramatic social, political, or economic shifts — a recurring theme in places where grand ambitions met the hard reality of change.
- Photographic Style and Technique: My approach was primarily documentary: capturing these buildings as they are, with minimal intervention. I favoured compositions that emphasise scale, texture, and the passage of time. Post-processing was kept subtle, focusing on natural tones and preserving the atmosphere of each place.
These photographs are my way of preserving the memory of places that risk disappearing forever. I hope they convey the haunting beauty I felt while exploring them.
