Doors and Thresholds Photography: A Journey Through Liminal Spaces

“Portals and Thresholds” (Doors and Thresholds) is a personal photographic exploration of liminal spaces – the in-between places that mark transitions, both physical and metaphorical. This album captures a collection of doorways, gateways, and thresholds encountered during my travels, primarily focusing on their architectural and symbolic significance. From ancient stone arches to decaying urban entrances, each image attempts to evoke a sense of history, mystery, and the promise of what lies beyond.

More than just architectural studies, these photographs are reflections on the act of entering and leaving, on the boundaries that define our experiences, and on the stories that these silent sentinels hold within their weathered surfaces. The project is deeply personal, reflecting my own fascination with the transient nature of existence and the enduring power of place.

• Camera and Lens: The majority of these images were captured using a Fujifilm X-T2 paired with a Fujinon XF 35mm f/2 R WR lens. This combination offered a balance of portability and image quality, allowing me to work discreetly in diverse environments.
• Lighting Challenges: Working with natural light presented unique challenges, particularly in dimly lit interiors and during harsh midday sun. I often relied on careful composition and post-processing techniques to balance exposure and highlight details within the shadows and highlights.
• Geographic and Historical Context: The photographs span several locations, including Italy, Spain, and Eastern Europe. Many of the subjects are found in areas rich with history, their architecture reflecting the cultural influences and historical events that have shaped the regions. Understanding the historical context of each location was crucial in informing my photographic approach.
• Photographic Style and Technique: My approach is primarily documentary, with a focus on capturing the inherent beauty and character of each subject. I aim for a natural and authentic representation, avoiding excessive manipulation or artificial enhancements. The use of black and white further emphasizes the textures, forms, and emotional resonance of the scenes.
• Thematic Exploration: Beyond the purely visual, the album explores themes of transition, memory, and the passage of time. Each doorway becomes a metaphor for the choices we make and the paths we choose to follow.

This collection represents a small part of my ongoing exploration of the world around me, a visual diary of moments captured and stories observed through the lens. – Stimpfl Daniel
