Escoles de la Sagrada Família: Gaudí's Playful Architecture Captured

Stepping into the Escoles de la Sagrada Família was an unexpected delight, a moment of intimate connection with Antoni Gaudí's genius that often gets overshadowed by the immense basilica next door. I remember the feeling of walking through these humble yet profoundly innovative structures, initially built as a school for the children of the Sagrada Família workers. There's a certain warmth and humanity here, a testament to Gaudí's holistic vision for his grand project, extending even to the smallest details of daily life. The curves, the light, the sheer ingenuity of the design – it truly captivates. My lens was drawn to how the natural light filtered through the unique windows, illuminating the intricate details of the ceilings and walls. It felt like a living space, full of movement and organic forms, far from the rigid geometry often associated with educational buildings. From the helical stairs that wind upwards with such grace to the tree-like columns that seem to grow from the very earth, every element speaks of a master craftsman deeply inspired by nature. Capturing this essence, this blend of practicality and poetry, was my primary goal.

Photographing Gaudí's Innovative School

  • My primary tool for documenting the Escoles de la Sagrada Família was my OPPO Find X5 (smartphone). Despite its compact size, this device allowed me to move freely and discreetly, capturing the subtle nuances of the architecture without being intrusive. Its capabilities proved surprisingly adept at rendering the complex textures and light variations within Gaudí's unique spaces.
  • The lighting within the school presented a fascinating challenge. Gaudí's design incorporates an abundance of natural light, but its dynamic nature, filtering through the wavy walls and unconventional windows, created areas of deep shadow and bright highlights. I focused on exposing for the mid-tones, allowing the shadows to add depth and the highlights to define the sculpted forms, especially where the "intricato soffitto illuminato" caught the light.
  • The Escoles de la Sagrada Família holds a special place in the history of Barcelona and modernist architecture. Constructed between 1909 and 1910, these schools were designed by Gaudí himself to serve the children of the workers building his magnum opus. Their innovative, undulating forms and economical construction methods were revolutionary for their time, showcasing Gaudí's experimental approach to structure and materials, even in a temporary building.
  • My photographic style here was largely about observation and finding the abstract within the functional. I aimed to highlight the organic lines and the interplay of light and shadow, much like one of the sample titles "Sagrada Familia: colonne arboree e volte celesti" suggests. I sought out compositions that emphasized the rhythmic curves, the tactile surfaces, and the sense of movement inherent in Gaudí's work, using the smartphone to explore unique perspectives, from wide shots capturing the overall form to close-ups of the exquisite details.
To capture these spaces, which feel both ancient and futuristic, with just a smartphone, was a rewarding experience. It's a reminder that true artistry, whether in architecture or photography, lies in vision and interpretation, not solely in the tools.
