Ruinele Hotelului Național: Chișinău's Forgotten Grandeur and Urban Decay
Stepping into the Ruinele Hotelului Național in Chișinău, Moldova, felt like entering a time capsule, a place where the past refuses to truly fade away. The air was thick with the silence of abandonment, yet every crumbling wall and shattered window whispered stories of a bygone era. It's a powerful experience to witness such a significant landmark in a state of advanced decay, a stark reminder of the impermanence of even the grandest structures. My aim was to capture this unique atmosphere, the melancholic beauty of decay, and the persistent echoes of the Soviet past that still resonate within these walls and beyond, into the city's broader urban fabric. The surrounding city of Chișinău itself, with its Soviet-era residential districts and unique blend of old and new, provides a compelling backdrop. From the "blocchi di cemento" forming the skyline on a grey day to the peculiar sight of an abandoned warplane or a rusted T-34 tank, the city’s landscape is a rich tapestry of history and modernity. The Ruinele Hotelului Național stands as a poignant symbol within this landscape, a place where architectural ambition has yielded to the relentless march of time and neglect.
My Approach and Gear
For this series, I relied on a combination of gear to adapt to the varied conditions and capture the essence of the Ruinele Hotelului Național and its surroundings. My primary tool was the Sony Alpha 6300, paired with the versatile E 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 OSS lens. This setup allowed me to capture both wide architectural shots of the decaying hotel and detailed close-ups of textures and artifacts, from peeling paint to the Cyrillic signs found within the gloomy corridors. The flexibility of the zoom was crucial for navigating the often-restricted spaces and finding compelling compositions without changing lenses. For more spontaneous moments or when discretion was key, my OPPO Find X5 smartphone proved invaluable, offering a different perspective and ease of use in tighter spots. Lighting within the Ruinele Hotelului Național was a significant challenge. Natural light often filtered through broken windows, creating dramatic shafts of light and deep shadows, particularly in the "corridoio tetro con tende nere." This required careful exposure management, often pushing my ISO within the 50–2500 range to maintain detail in both highlights and shadows. Outside, the "cielo plumbeo" on a grey day lent a certain gravitas to the urban landscapes, emphasizing the starkness of the concrete blocks and the silhouette of the Soviet-era buildings. I sought to use these lighting conditions to enhance the melancholic and reflective mood of the entire series. The photographic style I adopted for the Ruinele Hotelului Național was one of quiet observation, focusing on the interplay between destruction and resilience. I aimed to highlight the details that tell a story – the "televisione d'epoca," the "cartelli con nomi in cirillico," and the way light interacts with decaying surfaces. My compositions often emphasized leading lines, such as those found in the long corridors, drawing the viewer deeper into the scene. The goal was to create images that are not just documents of decay but evocative portraits of a place steeped in history and poignant beauty. This project at the Ruinele Hotelului Național was a deeply personal exploration of memory, architecture, and the passage of time, capturing the profound silence and powerful visual narratives embedded within its forgotten walls.
