Castello Visconteo: Echoes of Abandonment Through My Lens
Stepping into the Castello Visconteo was like walking through a portal into a forgotten dream. The air hung heavy with dust and the quietude of centuries, each crumbling wall and decaying floorboard whispering tales of lives long past. This wasn't just a place; it was a profound experience, a journey into the heart of elegant decay where time itself seemed to have slowed to a crawl. My aim was to capture that palpable sense of abandonment, the melancholic beauty that permeates every corner of this magnificent, yet neglected, castle. I found myself drawn to the small, intimate details – a forgotten bottle, a solitary cradle, the ghostly outlines of furniture – all illuminated by the faint, filtered light. It was a deeply personal exploration, an attempt to connect with the lingering spirit of the Castello Visconteo and translate its silent poetry into a visual narrative.
My Approach to Documenting Castello Visconteo
- For this particular series within the evocative walls of Castello Visconteo, I relied on my trusty samsung SM-A715F. This device, while compact, allowed me the flexibility to navigate the tight spaces and often challenging conditions of the castle's interiors, ensuring I could capture the raw, unfiltered atmosphere.
- The primary challenge was undoubtedly the lighting conditions. Inside the castle, natural light was a rare commodity, often filtering through grimy, broken windows or narrow openings. This created dramatic contrasts between deep shadows and unexpected pockets of illumination. I embraced this scarcity, using the dim light to enhance the mood of mystery and decay. The camera's ISO range, from 64 to 500, was instrumental, allowing me to capture detail in these low-light scenarios without sacrificing the authentic, gritty texture of the environment.
- The historical and geographical context of Castello Visconteo is inherently tied to its photographic appeal. Once a vibrant center of power and life, it now stands as a poignant monument to the passage of time. Documenting it meant acknowledging its storied past while focusing on its present state of graceful surrender to nature and neglect. Each room felt like a chapter in a forgotten book.
- My photographic style here was deeply focused on narrative and detail. I sought to tell stories through the objects left behind and the spaces themselves. From the 'Culla abbandonata illuminata dalla luce fioca' to the 'Scheletri in posa in un'aula abbandonata', I aimed to evoke a sense of lingering presence and the beauty found in imperfection. The technique involved careful composition, often framing through doorways or using leading lines to draw the viewer into the scene, emphasizing the depth and desolation of each space.
